David and Goliath

One of the latest trends inspiring fear in a lot of parents is the issue of bullying. I feel like it’s one of those things that’s been happening forever, but is getting a lot of media attention lately for whatever reason. Is it really getting worse than it’s always been, or are parents raising more sensitive kids than they used to? Who knows? The real point is that new or not, it’s happening and it’s not cool.

To the left is a series of tweets from Vivian. Her son Vicente had been being bullied (made fun of and by this point physically assaulted), and she tells him to stick up for himself. While no parent should condone violence, I agree 100% that a kid should be able to defend himself in these situations.

You don’t have to look very hard to see that even God fully supports self-defense. In the Old Testament, David defeats Goliath and is later chosen as king (1-2 Samuel). And in the New Testament, Jesus himself gets a little angry (Matthew 21) when he thinks there is wrong being done.

It’s such a fine line. I want to raise a kid that’s secure enough to stick up for himself, but sweet enough to not want to unless absolutely necessary.

Sadly, Vicente is only five years old! It’s so sweet that at such a young age he already shows such heart. “I don’t want to be mean…” Breaks my heart!
