Fall Update – How’d I Do?

Is it just me, or does the fall always seem to fly by in a blur of Halloween candy and Thanksgiving leftovers? I mean, how is this year almost over? Seriously, I’m asking. They (the elusive “they”) say that time goes by faster the older you get. There’s nothing scientific about it, but I’m a believer.

This time of year always seems to see my calendar fill up quickly and leave me exhausted and ready for the winter social hibernation ahead.

That said, I love it.

It’s the start of holiday party season and it’s full of fun traditions like my annual brunch/shopping trip with my friend, Annie. Yes, we went again and it was as glorious as ever.

I will admit that the Fall Bucket List has seen better years, but I’m still proud of the things I’ve accomplished this season. So, how DID I do?

(1) Another Attempt at a Homemade Costume – FAIL

Well, technically it was a fail, but the second I hit that “Submit Order” button on Amazon, I felt a huge weight lifted off my shoulders. Although I was extremely proud of the costume I made my son last Halloween, it was such a relief to cross this to-do off my list. It cost about as much to buy complete as it would have to order, and Miles looked pretty stinking adorable, if I do say so myself.

Having the costume off my plate also enabled me to make some great Halloween treats for M’s class, inspired by these.

In addition to the usual sweet treats I make every year, I took a note from Little Frills and filled small kraft paper bags with stickers and other goodies, and used pencils and yarn to make them look like brooms. So cute!

(2) A New Take on Pecan Pie – SUCCESS

A few weeks ago, my husband and I got a surprise from my in-laws. After a sudden windfall, they decided to purchase a new car…and gift us their old one. Without going into TOO much detail, the car we have been using is in pretty rough shape. It’s over 15 years old and has survived more than one fender bender in its day. As such, we were SO thankful!

Part B of their generous gift was that they would drive it to us (from Kansas)…and spend Thanksgiving with us!

While I didn’t make the cookies that I originally intended on, I knew there was no way I could get away with hosting Thanksgiving dinner without a pecan something or another. I opted for these bars instead…

…and they’re so good!

The recipe is from Rock Recipes, and they were surprisingly easy to make – which says a lot coming from me. BONUS: They were a big hit with my father-in-law.

(3) An Un-Sick Day at the Pumpkin Patch – FAIL

Did I mention how busy the fall has been? Among the list of fun activities we took on are: the ROC Race, a puppet show version of 1001 Arabian Nights, a visit from my sister and her boyfriend, and a trip to Miami. Throw in a baby shower and what felt like 72 birthday celebrations, and sadly, the trip to the pumpkin patch got bumped.

In retrospect, I kind of wish we had squeezed it in somewhere, but I know it would have stressed me out in the moment. So, I think we made the right call. There’s always next year…

(4) Preparing for Advent – TBD

I bought a really cute countdown calendar with activities on each page from one of my biggest weaknesses (AKA Target’s Dollar Spot). At the very least, we’ll have those to do, but I’m still working on coming up with other activities. I know I literally have one day to formulate a plan, but I’m confident I can pull something together.

At the very least, we’ll decorate our tree and bake some cookies together. And there’s always reading “Twas the Night Before Christmas” and a handful of must-watch holiday movies. Yeah, I think we’ll be okay.

BONUS: Celebrate both National Chocolate Day and National Candy Corn Day

Such a huge success, I’d say it almost makes up for the things I didn’t finish. Just to be safe, I’m going to eat a little extra chocolate tonight…

How was YOUR fall? Did you get everything done that you wanted to? Care to share your fails so I don’t feel so bad?
