Lately: May Faves

I’ve decided to start a new monthly series: Lately. Let me be honest. What takes up my time (and I’m guessing yours)? TV, books, music, food, and fashion…in other words, pop culture.

WATCHING: Pretty Little Liars

If you follow me on Twitter (PS – if you don’t, get to it!), you have probably noticed that I’m a big fan of live-tweeting. It could be anything from an awards show to a political debate to #ShowsOverBros – a little side project where I re-watch older shows with a friend just for the chance to offer commentary (currently on season 4 of One Tree Hill).

One of my favorite shows to tweet on is Pretty Little Liars. Currently in its final season, recent episodes have been some of the wildest yet, and that’s saying a lot.

The show follows a tight group of friends through all the normal high school (and post high school since the time jump in season 5) drama…assuming your normal drama included a lot of secrets and murder.

I’m a weenie when it comes to all things scary, and the creepiness here is about as much as I can take. Catch up on Netflix in time for the series finale next month!

READING: Born a Crime by Trevor Noah

I’m usually in bed long before The Daily Show and other late night shows come on, so while I had heard of Trevor Noah (mostly from his minor Twitter scandal when he was named the host a while back), I didn’t really know anything about him.

I started the year with a list of books that I wanted to read, and this wasn’t originally on it. But the rave reviews from friends who have read it coupled with the fact that I have a dear friend who also grew up in South Africa around the same time as him made it hard to resist this memoir. PLUS, the local library had a copy – JACKPOT!

There will be a better review included in my next TLF Book Club post, so until then, I’ll just say this: Read it.

LISTENING TO: “How Far I’ll Go” from Disney’s Moana

Okay, okay, it’s confession time. I still haven’t seen Moana. I know; I should be ashamed of myself. Disney plus Lin-Manuel Miranda should equal a must-see. One day…

HOWEVER, one fateful afternoon, scrolling along down my Facebook feed, I came upon this gem of a video:

I’ve been listening to this song on a loop ever since. That little girl is about the cutest thing I’ve ever seen, and Auli’i Cravalho is a real-life Disney princess. They win.

EATING: Chocolate. Chip. Pie.

I’ve always enjoyed baking, thanks in part to my major sweet tooth. Unfortunately, I don’t always have the time (or energy) required to whip up masterful culinary creations.

Thanks to Pinterest, I stumbled upon this recipe for Chocolate Chip Pie.

With just a handful of ingredients, most of which you probably already have in your kitchen, this is one of the simplest recipes I’ve seen in a while.

Stir, into crust, bake, done.

And it’s literally what it says it is: a thick chocolate chip cookie in a (store-bought) pie crust.

If you’re looking for a yummy, easy dessert to bring to a pot-luck…or you’re like me and just want something extra-delicious to munch on at home, I highly recommend giving this recipe a whirl.

After the winter that would not end, the temperatures finally broke into the 80’s last week, which means my poor, pasty legs got to see the light of day.

Granted, the high temps have dipped back down a little bit, but I’m willing the heat to come back.

And, yes, I know I’ll regret it in a few weeks when my little A/C window units are struggling to cool off my apartment, but for now I am smiling bigger with every degree that thermometer rises.

At any rate, I bought this dress from LOFT for Easter Sunday, but it has quickly become one of my favorites. BONUS: it’s on sale!

What are YOU loving right now? Anything (including, but not limited to movies, TV shows, music, podcasts, books, theater, [NYC] restaurants, recipes, clothing/accessories, websites…) I should put on my must-check-out list?
