October has always been a weird month for me. November is my favorite (Thanksgiving and our anniversary) and September is up there too (Back to School!). Despite the fun of Halloween, something about October has never quite measured up.

Luckily, this month has been filled with some awesome stuff this year – hiking, apple picking, birthday parties, and more! It’s also been a pretty great month for me in terms of pop culture. Check it…

WATCHING: Master of None (on Netflix)

masterMaster of None starring Aziz Ansari is a show I’ve been hearing about for a while. Everyone seems to love it, but I never quite found myself in the mood to dive in. On top of that, I will only ever hear an enthusiastic “treat yo’self” every time I look at Ansari (AKA Tom Haverford from “Parks and Recreation”).

But I have to admit, I’ve been pleasantly surprised. I’m about halfway through the show’s second season, and I’m really enjoying it!

The series follow’s Dev, an Indian-American actor navigating life in New York City. It’s only slightly absurd, and very funny. Truth be told, it might be my favorite thing ever that his actual parents play his parents on the show.

READING: A Gentlemen in Moscow by Amor Towles

Gentleman.jpgThe last book we had to read for my office’s book club was kind of a bust, so I definitely came into this one with cautious optimism. Thankfully, I LOVED IT!

Towles sneakily gives you a lesson in Russian history through this novel that spans various genres – adventure, romance, workplace, caper… It has a little bit of everything.

Per Amazon:

In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

If you’re looking for an entertaining next read, I highly recommend picking this one up.

LISTENING TO: Deadly Manners

Deadly.pngI’ve only recently started getting into the great big world of podcasts. There is just so much out there that it was overwhelming for me to figure out where to begin. Sure, who didn’t listen to “Serial” a couple of years back? But now there are a million more options.

I recently listened to “36 Questions,” but that was mainly because of my love for Jonathan Groff. Plus, it was a short one.

Somehow, I stumbled upon “Deadly Manners” in a similar way, because of my love for Kristen Bell. It’s a dark comedy murder mystery set with an all-star cast (Kristen Bell, Denis O’Hare, RuPaul, Anna Chlumsky… narrated by LeVar Burton). I’m only four episodes in, but I’m hooked and can’t wait to find out who the killer is!

EATING: Halloween Candy

Ritter.pngHalloween officially kicks of delicious candy season (which goes from now until Easter). I have a crazy sweet tooth to begin with, but the next few months are extra challenging since having an assortment of treats around seems to be the norm for this time of year.

It’s crazy that when the candy bars are “fun sized” you somehow think you can eat an untold number of them and still be okay…

Some of my favorites are Twix, Kit Kat, and a good old fashion Hershey’s bar with almonds. If I’m feeling fancy, I’ll stop by a specialty store for a Kinder Bueno or a Ritter Sport (Cornflakes is so good!), some of my international faves.

WEARING: Red Dexter Boots

Dexter.jpgAbout ten years ago, I was helping some friends move out of there tiny Brooklyn apartment and came upon these gems. I could tell they were pretty old, but once I had them cleaned and re-soled, they were good as new.

I wore them quite a bit that winter (they help liven up an all-black outfit) and the couple of years that followed, but put them in semi-retirement for a while after that.

Well, ladies and gents, who knew? Red is the official color of fall 2017, so these lovelies are officially out of retirement. Thus far, I’ve only worn them under pants to give me that pop of color, but one of these days I’ll have an occasion to let them out to play!

What are YOU loving right now? Anything (including, but not limited to movies, TV shows, music, podcasts, books, theater, [NYC] restaurants, recipes, clothing/accessories, websites…) I should put on my must-check-out list?
